The "Vintage Briefcase Collection" Story

Some weeks ago we had a seemingly random customer stop in with a briefcase of cards. Later we discovered they were actually referred to us by a fellow dealer. The briefcase contained close to 500 cards from a few select vintage sets, 1948 Leaf, 1951 Bowman, 1952 Topps, 1953 Topps and 1954 Topps. Pulses elevated and excitement grew upon seeing a handful of PSA graded cards, with a 1953 Mickey Mantle PSA 5 being the highlight. About 30 or so of the cards were graded including two 1953 Topps Satchel Paige PSA 6’s, a 1948 Leaf Ted Williams PSA 2, and both a 1953 and 1954 Jackie Robinson. The rest of the cards were a solid assortment of mid grade commons and minor stars, with the majority coming from 1952 Topps. We were thrilled with the overall condition and organization of the set, and saw a great opportunity to not only help out the seller, but find new homes for these classic cards. We reached a deal that worked for both parties, and the seller even provided a write up included below, detailing the origins of the collection. A collection of this caliber was impressive to acquire, but even more impressive is the fact that these cards all came from an original owner, who purchased them back in the 40’s and 50’s:

“This is an original owner collection.  My uncle collected baseball cards as he was growing up in the 1950’s. Unfortunately he passed away at an early age, and my Grandma had a difficult time parting with anything that belonged to him.  She gave me this collection in a shoebox that was kept under my uncle’s bed.

Over the years, I sent some of the cards in to be graded.  I tried to talk my Grandma into selling the more valuable ones, but she wouldn’t hear of it.  She passed away several years ago, and no one in the family had any interest in the collection.

This collection has been sitting in a briefcase in our closet for over 25 years.  We decided it was time to sell it and let someone enjoy it!

High Five was recommended to us by a good friend.  Justin & Jason have been awesome to work with!”

We love stories like these, and sincerely endeavor to make sure collections like these are valued correctly and honestly. If you have a collection or items you would like to sell, please feel free to fill out a form and one of our owners will be in touch! Collection Form
